Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
Also known as: AEO
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the discipline of getting your content selected as the direct answer in answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Bing Copilot.
AEO sits between traditional SEO and GEO. Where SEO targets rank in a list of links and GEO targets being the named brand in a generated answer, AEO targets being the selected answer source — the sentence, paragraph, or table that the answer engine lifts.
The work that wins AEO includes direct-answer phrasing (the user's question phrased back to itself, immediately followed by a 1–3 sentence answer), FAQPage and HowTo schema, comparison tables, and short retrievable paragraphs with concrete claims. The reward shape is binary: your content is the selected answer or it isn't.
AEO is broader than GEO because it covers answer engines built on traditional search infrastructure (Google AI Overviews, Bing Copilot) as well as the conversational AI assistants.
