Model Knowledge Cutoff

A model's knowledge cutoff is the date after which the language model has no information in its training data.

Each frontier model has a cutoff date — typically 6–18 months before its release. GPT-4.5 has an early-2024 cutoff. Claude 4 has a mid-2024 cutoff. Without retrieval, the model literally doesn't know about events, products, or pricing changes after that date.

This is why the retrieval layer matters so much. For brands that launched or significantly changed after a model's cutoff, RAG is the only path into the answer until the next model retraining cycle.

FAQ

How does the knowledge cutoff affect GEO?

If your brand or product launched after a model's cutoff, the model can't mention you from parametric knowledge alone. You need retrieval-layer optimization (Bing rank, freshness signals, citation density) to appear at all.
